Just a quick note to let you know how I can help you or anyone you might introduce to me.
When I saw my friend Peter at a neighborhood party he looked preoccupied. It seems his 22-year-old daughter Jane was talking about buying a house, and he was worried that she really couldn’t afford it. He was willing to help Jane with the down payment, but wasn’t confident she understood the responsibilities of a mortgage.
I met with Jane and after reviewing her financial situation, I told her that she could indeed afford a house. She was surprised because she thought her father had set up this meeting to dissuade her. I explained that my role as a consultant was to help her understand her choices and the consequences, and then I spoke frankly about what her life would be like with her new mortgage: no vacations, no new furniture, no eating out, no entertainment. In short, things would be very lean until her income situation improved. In the end, Jane decided to make the necessary sacrifices and I helped her purchase a nice little starter home. She made a fully informed decision and feels good about her choice — and so does Peter!
